Rectangular pipes are a common variety in pipes. Its weight calculation formula is:

Weight=density×volume=density×(cross-sectional area×length), namely: m=ρ×V=ρ×(F×L)

To adjust the weight, the most important thing is to calculate the size of the cross-sectional area.

The cross-sectional shapes of square and rectangular tubes are divided into two types: rounded and right-angled. In the specific adjustment, the R angle of the rounded tube is usually ignored.

Square tubes

F=4×(a-d)×d

a = length or side length

b=width, d=thickness

Rectangular tubes

F=2×(a+b-2d)×d


Carefully look at the calculation formula, and with a little imagination, you can know that this is calculated by cutting and flattening the section square and moment ring into a slender rectangle. In fact, other profiles, such as I-beam, H-beam, etc., can also be easily adjusted using this idea.


For example: a rectangular steel pipe with a size of 50mm×20mm×3mm, one 6 meters, what is the weight?

Weight calculation: m=2×(50+20-2×3)×3×6000×0.00000785=18.0864(kg)

Classification of rectangular tubes:

Steel pipes are divided into seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes (seamed pipes), such as hot-rolled seamless rectangular tubes, cold-drawn seamless  rectangular tubes, extruded seamless rectangular tubes, and welded  rectangular tubes. The welded square tube is divided into:

1. According to the process, it is divided into arc welded rectangular tube, resistance welded rectangular tube (high frequency, low frequency), gas welded rectangular tube, furnace welded rectangular tube;

2. According to the welding seam, it is divided into straight seam welded rectangular tube and spiral welded rectangular tube.

The use of rectangular tube:

Construction, machinery manufacturing, steel construction projects, shipbuilding, solar power brackets, steel structure engineering, power engineering, factories, agricultural and chemical machinery, glass curtain walls, automobile chassis, airports, etc.

Matters needing attention: The utilization rate of Q345 seamless rectangular tube is very high, but the general construction party should do a visual inspection of the pipes, pipe fittings, rubber rings, etc. before construction, and abandon the use if any problems are found.
